March 9 Re-Cap

The ukulele, (pronounced /ˌjuːkəˈleɪliː/ EW-kə-LAY-lee,[1] from Hawaiian: ʻukulele [ˈʔukuˈlɛlɛ]; variantly spelled ukelele in the UK), sometimes abbreviated to uke, is a chordophone classified as a plucked lute; it is a subset of the guitar family of instruments, generally with four nylon or gut strings or four courses of strings.

The Tiny Tim Overdrive were the very special guests this week:

So Tiny Tim Overdrive are a ukulele army that plays all your favourite hits from any musical era. They did a Sesame Street song celebrating the letter M, and of course there were game to back up the old Super Robertson for a few numbers. I was actually cursing myself that i turned down one King hell drummer and one ball stomping keyboard player because i worried that there wouldn't be enough room on stage and it could be a sound nightmare... Last time in December TTO played the Supper show and they were a 5 piece... on this night they were a 3 piece. My error not contacting them and finding out what was happening... when you assume you become and ass as my grade 7 teacher always said. Not that there was anything wrong with what happened... it's just that i had a chance to put TTO with drums and piano (in very competent hands) and i passed. Wasn't i going off ad nausium the other week about being a form to explore these interactions and the whole time i was barking i had my head up my ass chewing colon.

Perhaps i need more lists... things to not forget... it's always hard talking up a Super Robertson Supper Show... the guests ask "what is the format", and they get the answer "well it changes every week... what can you do and we will work the show around that"... most then say "I play songs" and then when they are hit with "could you do poetry over some improv grooves"... and then things become confusing. Having Tiny Tim Overdrive on the show before i felt comfortable... they are good people, have a cool thing going, and are good sports to try things...

Super Steve had the comedy comment of the month so far after the show talking about the song Bathroom Squeegee... in his low baritone voice he mentioned that Tiny Tim would have liked that number. Why i decided to play that song was probably because it was an easy g-d-c song... i don't believe i had played it for 15 years and i forgot the 3rd verse and i screwed up the 2nd verse (employment's packed up to me the deck is stacked). One can only wonder why i would attempt to lead 3 backup ukulele players into a song i hadn't played for 15 years and couldn't really remember is beyond the grasp of most. That is probably why it is dangerous to have too many conversations with your guest before the show on what will happen lest your guest becomes spooked.

One great thing that happened was that the Tiny Tim Overdrive took home the words to "On frozen Pond", "98 BOB" and "Last Call" as they are always looking for Canadian artist to cover. To my knowledge, Simian Special (Hey rock took the bait) and Zoe trio (everything) are the only ones to have covered songs i have had a hand in writing. I would love to be just a songwriter... hint hint!

One thing for sure there will be no spooking the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra for the March 16 2011 SRSS. Myself and the Supreme Janitor got into a good tanking last week after the Supper Show... there were many drunken statements and earth moving discussions. I do take a fair number of shots at my good man Fire-Man in the blog with respect to his ability to jam on the horn with instruments that have range and a distinctive tuning, but you have to respect balls.

Truth be told The Legion Of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra are easily the best drawing regular acts of the Super Robertson Supper Show. There might actually be 20+ people committed to coming to the show (march 16 2011) on Facebook, whatever the hell that means... 10x more than the usual. It's amazing what can happen when you make the effort to tell your peeps what's happening. That's the beauty of the SR supper show.. it's free and it's over by 8:30 so you you can get to work the next day (barring you don't get into a good mid week hammer time session with our fearless leader)

Fire-Man works hard at his art and it comes off, a lot of folks pluck a few chords and sing a few cliches about love and think they are artists. I spent a lot of my life struggling with the concept of "artist"... am i an artist for real? is it presumptuous to call yourself that? You know what? Fuck it, I'm a trained scientist and nobody listens to scientists so what is a fucking label anyway.

The Legion Of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra steals bits from the corporate world to sell people on fun insanity... parallel to consumer insanity. If you can write a great song and work a custom wood crafted horn into it so that during the song you have forgotten that there is an army of people on stage all honking original works of art then that's OK in my books any day.

Puppet Show! Horn Orchestra! New evil cult video. Special guests: Daniel Lunn and John Korsrud. All this at the Super Robertson Supper Show on Wed the 16th of March at 7:30pm. Free! Free! Totally Free!!!!
