October 21st re-cap

Gosh darn i was just going to post the video's and let them do the talking but i noticed that I have been upstaged by a wide screen video device and the screen is so wide that it cuts into the previous post portion of this here blog... and well of course we can't have that, so i guess we need some text to buy some space

As i was saying, it was a great show, the room was packed, there was participation, and suppers... what else do you need.

A Hockey game... there was that too: a Vancouver victory over the Chicago Black Hawks.

Next week Ganny Trigo and SR play songs... like this one

perhaps we have used enough space:

what you are looking at is a chiral image of the Dick Cash show last week at the SRSS done by S. Robertson, King Dinosaur and Jake, which was half the crowd on this particular night, but as Super Steve said "i like these guys... not a crowd but they still played hard for the people who were there". It should be noted that the Bass player has been drawn 2x... call it an error.

There is a great lesson in crowd/ supper show ratio, which has a bunch of odd turns here and there but i don't really feel like going into it at this time, as there is beer to be brewed, bottles to be washed and babies to be hushed. Next thing you know it will be time for that supper show tomorrow.... the one that will have "Sean and John", a father and son duo and "The Legion of Flying Monkies Horn Orchestra".

Why do kids have to constantly scream? It's just really insane... do we need to hear this... wait a minute... MUSIC we need music... that will take care of that incessant wailing in the background... Music is important... never forget that... i almost tried to make the point that music is not important... foolish. Time for a Winston Churchill quote

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm

– Sir Winston Churchill

well that's better

I was asked to play guitar for the horn band set but i suffered an undisclosed upper body injury, actually i have swine flu, or Rubella... i mean i need to film the show, yes that's it... it has to be captured by a professional and it's too late to call in somebody from Hollywood... the flights might not connect in time.

October 7 Re-Cap

It was a Dillworth and Matheson show and i almost didn't go, but then i saw that the game was on on TSN... not that a Dillworth and Matheson show would not be great, and it was, it's just that i end up a little burned out from time to time. When i came in I saw Cam and we talked about such a thing... how everybody is getting older and they don't have the energy to get out, but then he noted that I get out more than most which is rather a victory being a man with 3 kids. indeed, super robertson or sucker robertson, or scene sucking robertson... it don't matter because the Canucks came to play putting on a 6-1 demolition over the Montreal Canadians... too bad King Dino wasn't there, no super steve either, just me drinking and watching hockey and hearing the SRSS. Well the first intermission came so i moved up to the show and caught some classic Cam and Jesse... the gag where Cam stands behind Jesse with his arms playing guitar whispering the lyrics into Jesse's ear for Jesse to sing... classic. Cam played a classic Cam song and they did Poop Machine, and Caleb Stull was called up for a song, which was excellent. I slipped back to the game... my team was playing well which was a first for the season (one of my teams has yet to win a game as of this writing). It was around the time that Henrik scored a nice backhand goal top shelf where mommy hides the cookies that i heard in the distance that Cam and Jesse were trying to call me up to the stage to play a song... in one way i would have liked to play "nothing was heard" with Shawn Killaly on drums and Cam and Jesse harmonizing on the chorus, now that the words are done... but in another way i didn't want to jinx the energy of the universe and fowl up the first "feel good" game of the year... so i pretended i didn't hear them. Imagine that guys on stage saying things and people not listening... silly.

tomorrow catch DICK CASH at the Super Robertson Supper Show

I have been trying to set up a new website, but it's odd... i just don't get it. No matter what happens i can't get it to work... it's this weird energy i have with computers... there is always some problem, no matter how simple the procedure has been said to be, and some step that if you follow word for word in the instructions has a bunch of different and alarmingly new titles... and then there is odd compatibilities with respect to operating system versions. At one point today i was almost in tears over the pure insanity that i had spent 9 hours trying to set up a domain name with a server with the ability to update the site, which i still can't do. It's safe to say that i don't get it and i never will for some reason.

Last weeks supper show went well... a good crew came out with the lure of cake, Pockets and Fire-Man came correct and helped create a fine supper show

words from a swine Flu survivor

Robertson theater... excellent horn Fire-Man

Shawn Killaly phoned me today and apparently he will be playing drums at the SRSS tomorrow with Cam and Jesse.

pre supper show update

never really thought of attacking the blog this way

but more importantly

NOTE to SELF

remind Fire-Man that he is NEVER to play horn if a guitar or bass are being played at a supper show... exception permitted and encouraged when the LFM are booked to play.

and on the positive side i have "written" the horn into the "robertson theater" portion of the evening, which i believe might provide the opportunity for the horn to shine.

OK

September 23 re-cap

On September 23 the SRSS was graced with the presence of The Land of Deborah. To her left, in his old spot, was King Willingdon Black. King Willingdon Black, who seems to be trying to get away from the name "Willingdon Black" for some odd reason, was doing his thing and sounding stellar as per usual... except of course usual can become unusual with time. I had a lot of people ask me why Willingdon Black doesn't play with 21 Tandem repeats anymore, to which of course i reply "there is a band called 21 Tandem Repeats that plays". Perhaps it's time for a new SRSS poster or something like that... but did anybody ever pay attention to a poster anyway?

For the record 21TR did play a gig a few months back but it was kind of last minute and required the 11th hour hiring of an unknown yet excellent drummer... not the ideal situation for a proper reunion.

speaking of proper reunions we did spank a version of "Blue skies" with LOD and JL "big dinner" S at the end of the night. In the end i'm sure that if Willingdon Black is concerned about anything it is that his name has been mentioned 5 times in 3 paragraphs.

It's almost like the original SR chronicles from the old Roadbed site... Ahh the good old days where boys would be boys and men would be men and it can get harder to describe when you don't really have it... like another broken soul who never made it to the end of the Road bed time in the city of fallen heroes... whoa getting way to far into the inside jokes here on this blog that apparently is to serve some other communal purpose.

Tomorrow September 30 there will be cake... and some non musical Robertson theater, and a spoken word piece by pockets on her survival of SWINE FLU... plus more great things...

hot damn i sent out the email before the blog was written

all right the question is.. what key piece of information was wrong with the email that was sent out to The SRSS faithful. The answer would be the day... there is no September 21 2009... but there is an October 21 2009, so if one were to check on their handy desktop calendar with the magic click of a Mouse, and one forgot to make sure the Month was dialed in correctly, one could then resemble a small hoarse. i go back to Mr. Helkima's grade 7 class... he would say "when you assume things you become an..." and then he would underline the first three letters of the word in question.

I'm not really a re-send email kind of guy, and i assume that anyone unfortunate enough to get a weekly email about the same fucking show for 4 years and counting can either figure it out or ignore as per usual. But if perhaps somebody read that and in their despair invented a time machine that goes to a parallel universe and ends up seeing the show that was accidentally listed, please send in a review for the blog... i would be interested to see how the SR songbook holds up in another dimension...

Ok, where were we

last week it was the stalwart JLS and myself... remembering when i first met JLS all those years ago... it was through this girl Catherine... JLS was on a grassy Knol, i believe plucking a banjo. Probably like 15 years ago. But last week we were on stage at the Railway, a once untouchable venue, all alone with a drum kit a guitar and amp and a few Boss pedals... Going over the tape, we did pretty good when you consider all the variables... the idea being that the leader should consider the variables before he begins his experiments, is what you are all thinking I am sure... but have no fear we have everything under control around here... what that show was all about was a method we call di-shifter reverbulance.

Di-Shifter reverbulance of course is where the artist uses 4 of the 7 main shockras to stimulate inner spiritual growth with special focus on the di-cogulant Alfrezzo clause.

It's kind of like simple physics... poke the beast and it shall bleed, and with thy blood nurture thy bless id child.

and on Wednesday September 23 we have The Land of Deborah

Clive is King

And then the was the Super Robertson Supper show, with ace axeman Jeff Younger, Dr. Kristian Naso and JLS the destroyer.

It was like Jazz night at the SRSS early in the evening:

and then rock night

and the Hey Rock Night

and then it was Hammer time... lets just say i was standing outside Gigi's pizza @ 1:30 am trying to rally a crew when i should have been in bed... no worries we found pizza on commercial but i really could have used a bit of the old Sim Special sauce, at that moment in time... a smart Canadian man wouldn't have accepted staying on the street at that moment after all we went through.

Tuesday, September 08, 2009

Last week at the SRSS... AKA the "Diner" show as Cam and Jesse call it, a fine show was had for an eager group of listeners. There were the usual "poop" jokes, and Jesse even read a book on the subject, a children's book about a mole who takes a poo on the head and sets out on a journey to find out who did "that" to his head.

It's an actual book here
Cam and Jesse never fail.

Next week, or tomorrow for that matter we have vancouver's ace axeman Jeff Younger, to stomp down some stuff, as well as goat robertson.

Prog Overthrow! @ the August 26 Supper Show

Tonight, hunkered down in Super Robertson’s crawlspace (rented to me as a so-called basement suite and already harbouring an ex-contestant from Megan Wants a Millionaire), I managed to capture the elusive “blogaroo.” Once freed from the leg-hold trap, it jumped on my lap, licked my elbows, passed wind, then sounded its familiar “spittle trumpet” as two lightly-furred tentacles slid from its pouch, encircled my index fingers and guided me in tapping out the following:

With famous person SR paying respects at the G Force memorial, it was left to The Gentle Infidels to entertain the Supper Show crowd, which included David Bash, from the International Pop Overthrow, Land of Deborah, and members of South Burnaby heavies Tarkake. It had been a long layoff for TGI, but the trio delivered a set of not-so-gentle folk rock that was pure sonic splendour in the grass. I’d forgotten what ace clinicians the trio are: Cellist Chris Rzepa, Ferdy Belland on bass (the fretless acoustic kind), and Ed Bond on guitars of his own making. No messing around, this band play some heavy shit and are an easy recommendation if you crave the “underground” sounds from the Woodstock-to-Watergate era; i.e., when shit was heavy. They’re never ones to miss a teaching moment either; we learned from the stage that beer can stave off osteoporosis and that the Railway should host an International Prog Overthrow featuring Pentangle, The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, Comus (my pick), Camel and Caravan (David’s picks). I think The Gentle Infidels should get on that lineup too.

It all went down a treat with a couple “pints” of Crannog stout.

Love,
The Mule

Aug 26 2009

Last week Jacqui Brown and her band put on a strong clinic, and Super R held his own for a few tunes.

The Gentle Infidels are playing the SRSS on August 26th 2009:

I guess this is from June 25 2008... good thing i recorded it, saves me having to describe it. If i were to venture into that territory i would call it "One king hell trio", but as we recall I'm no reviewer but rather something else all together.

I, Super Robertson will have to miss this Supper Show as August 26th was the date chosen to gather to celebrate the life of a very good friend of mine by the name of Gareth Evans, who lost a valiant battle with cancer earlier this year. It will be a night of perspective for myself... a chance to gather and remember that guy who use to scramble up mountains ahead of me all the while kicking down mini avalanches of boulders and when pressed on his climbing technique he would just turn around and say " you should probably not climb right behind me, because that's going to happen".

I'll remember the time one of our friends fell down a glacier and Gareth cheered him on... "whoo hoo all right he's finally getting into it" he yelled until the victim tumbled past us and towards a large cliff. Or the time he hiked the West Coast Trail on a sprained ankle, and refused to complain, and the artwork (that never made it) for the original ROADBED Represented CD... it would sound very childish to try to explain it, but it was really funny... really. Come to think of it, on that CD the song "chimp" and the song "Banana" got their titles from the 11th hour beer infused graphic design session.

Gareth rallied me for art sessions, hackey sac and the dreaded but loved "mid week hammer time". He once defined himself as a "recreator", his friends called him a monkey climber and fighter, a political debater and George Bush hater... any sport where you could get injured flying through the air he did it. If a drawing took a few million dots placed precisely with a fine point pen, he did it. When he got his teeth into something then look out, stuff was going to happen. Of course there is so much more...

Back in the days when he and i camped a lot some times i would have a lot on my plate and thought i didn't "need" to go camping, Gareth would have none of that, so we would go, and then at night, when our tents sat among the stars and we pulled another cold beer from the glacier, i would get the inevitable "so imagine if you weren't here right now, wouldn't that be ridiculous"... yes it would.

I guess in death we have the opportunity to remember the positive spirit of the deceased, and we can choose to carry those traits in an effort to further enrich our lives and the lives of those who we associate with.

Cheers to you Gareth

time to man it up as a lesser sissy might go to bed about now

Super Robertson went and stomped down a solo set last week that was a fair clinic in it's own right... he was in Ontario for the past few weeks reminding himself why he lives far away from his relatives and the strip mall syndrome that defines certain parts of Ontario. So for the past little while King Dinosaur, the Vacant Stairs, and Cam and Jesse have held down the fort that is the Super Robertson Supper Show proper.

Tomorrow we have the lovely and talented Jacqui Brown, for her third time back at the Supper Show. She is one you don't want to miss. Super R will be there to experiment with some new songs as well.

so what happened in toronto?

21tr and Great Aunt Ida do the song "Bent"

Just wasted the night fucking around with a computer

It's fair to say that i don't "get" computers... there always seems to be some asshole obvious step that misses me, so instead of playing a good old violent game of hockey i go into a nice silent rage trying to do something that should take, or i have heard takes, a few minutes and is dead simple.

That's why we natural luddites like guitars. What's in your hands is what it is, sink or swim on the dexterity of your fingers and the sense of your rhythm, and of course the strength of your song. I play an e chord and it makes the sound of an e chord... i punch in stmp.telus.net and i get a fucking god damn window explaining that some asshole server is not responding.

where was i... Oh yea this is the Supper Show Blog... I'm here to yap on with some "smiley faced PR" about how good last week was and that a guy called Phoenix Magnolia is coming down tomorrow to stomp some percussive guitar work. what i do know about last week was that it was about 1:30 AM when i ping ponged up the stairs to my house... let's just say we got on a roll.

here is the show:

Canada Day

Of course there was a very sparse crowd at the Railway Club for the Canada Day Supper Show... what with all of the other free events outside on a beautiful day... but that didn't stop Cameron Dillworth, Super Robertson, Gido, Simian Special and Shockk from playing some music to the room. It was good times and i found a pill on the stage and tried to get C.S. Rippin to gulp it back but he wanted no part of that for some reason.

On Wednesday July 8 2009 the Super Robertson Supper show will present Genny Trigo doing some Spanish songs and some of the latest 21 tandem Repeats songs sung by Genny Trigo.

July is on us like a badman

Man, Wednesday morning 1:16 AM and the supper show blog has yet to be updated... This is pure commitment folks. Sure it seems like slackassery from one side of the book, or maybe it doesn't for i have never looked at the book from that angle. Why bother, you should only ever look ahead, but as you do of course, carry with you the wisdom of all of your failed ventures.
Well now that we are all on a positive note, i guess we should get down to business so i can begin to properly analyse some Internet pornography... that's a joke you crude bastard readers of the SRSS blog.

The legion of Flying Monkey's Horn Orchestra put on a fine show... I really wish i had taped a version of the "means of production garden son, "He has come to save us all" and the "three part tune in honour of the 2010 Olympic celebrations". The band was top notch, and Fire-Man stayed off the horn for a while, which is always a welcome event. i mean that more as a compliment to his song writing abilities and less as a slight to his atonal wailing. They put on a good show for sure... I was going to film it and like work the camera but then the needed my guitar (and put it to good use) and i was thinking of going to the colbalt later so i wanted to scale down on my possessions for the night.

On Canada Day, or Cannabis day as it has been come to be known, by some.. have you ever met Captain Cannabis? King hell guy i say. Anyway today is Canada day and as far as i know there is a SR Supper Show, and it's going to be Cameron Dilworth and Super Robertson, and a drummer and perhaps a Congo player... I smell a good time show later today... so little time so much to drink.

OK Happy Cannabis day, i mean Canada day.

Hey Rock stands tall and the Legion of flying monkeys Horn Orchestra is on deck

Last weeks SR Supper Show was a dandy for sure, I'd give the Gold Medal to Simian Special who put on one king hell drumming clinic, not that his rhythm partners Vic and Smash were eating parsnips behind the barn if you know what i mean... what the hell does that mean?
Perhaps we all should have formed a band years ago when there was still some time on the clock... none the less i didn't know what i needed to know back then, but that's always the case.

One of the things i do know is to beware of the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra.. it is a CULT headed by an insane maniac that seems to be picking up steam like a snowball going down the south side of a mountain on a hot sunny day in March. I was thinking of coming to the show with something that could make a really bizarre noise and then leap up on stage and do it in the middle of their set... which of course is what they would want, like a fly in the spider web you become one in the belly of the arachnoid.

So tomorrow we have the legion of flying monkeys horn orchestra at the Super Robertson Supper Show.

Hey Rock... the legend is strong

Last week at the super Robertson Supper Show we had a doors cover band named "Soul Kitchen"and Super Robertson. They hit the song Peace Frog, which is what i was hoping for and a version of "love me two times" which got me thinking of rhythm ideas with respect to songwriting. There were 2 levels of keyboards with a thin board holding up a massive box of some sort of sound equipment. It was good times for sure. On the SR side, he played a few new numbers and was heckled by an old high school nemesis named Ed Henley... i guess in the grand scheme of things it was SR who was in fact the nemesis as he was reminded about the time he set of firecrackers in Ed's back pocket during a scavenger hunt. i wonder how many people are arrested and or killed at these scavenger hunts... like there is always a stop sign on the list and its worth a lot of points. That could be a real safety issue for any of you worry wart pencil neck's out there in blogland. the whole episode had some of the regular folks wondering how many people from SR's past are out there carrying scars from incessant SR harassment.

Speaking of Nemesis and people to harass, this week at the SR Supper Show we have the Hey Rock, or Ross Vegas aloha sucker show. Last night i get this bizarre email from this dude named "Tim" about some show at the railway.

What i know is that Hey Rock is playing the Super Robertson Supper Show on Wednesday June 17th.

Hey Rock... the legend:

Hey Rock blows into Vancouver and tries to hook up with the music scene. Little does he know that there is no music scene, but it doesn't stop him because he still has hope and a good hip. Hey Rock meets the members of the classic band ROADBED who go on to produce his band's first release. Done of a 4-track the group has a knack for sweet little pop tunes sung with great harmonies... The Roadbed crew dubbed them "Champ and the Harmony Brothers" and prepared for their debut release, but no can do, the band recoiled at the thought of not being taken VERY SERIOUSLY, so they changed their name to Rubicon (n. A limit that when passed or exceeded permits of no return and typically results in irrevocable commitment.)... OK Guy!

In some ways that's what a music scene will do to a band, make them worry about things that are not important. I don't think the Barenaked Ladies ever worried about being taken seriously, but I'm pretty sure all of us fools in scene sucking bands would do anything for success on the level that the Ladies achieved.

Rubicon released a solid sounding CD under the hands of JLS and rode the ROADBED tails for a few years, and then Hey Rock struck off on his own forming a band called Ross Vegas who released a CD titled "Flow". Hey Rock is one hell of a singer and he is moving back to the his home town of Rossland B.C.

I know I'll miss Hey Rock, but those days were done when we all made the fool decision to have kids... so it's really every man for himself, just like it always was and always will be, but when you are young you tend to believe in things that might make sense in a movie.

Have no fear... from what i understand the band Ross Vegas will carry on with a "new" Hey Rock at the helm as a matter of principle, and of course Hey Rock has been immortalized in a few Roadbed songs the most obvious being "Hey Rock took the bait", a song which i might mention has since been covered by another fantastic Vancouver band named Simian Special.

Fucking hell... it feels like i'm writing a damn biography of Hey Rock and i haven't even got to the part where Super Robertson and Shockk spent a few good years of their lives putting Hey Rock on Swirly alert. Of course a Swirly is where you shove a person's head into the toilet and give it a flush... which is actually what the song "Hey Rock took the bait" was all about. Everything back in those days was about luring Hey Rock close to a toilet so we could pounce on his ass and go for a quick swirly, and if he wasn't such a strong person we would have had him. One time his head was inches from that tiolet water and we were on his head like a raccoon on a hound but he found the strength to lurch back at the moment of truth.

If there was only one more time where Hey Rock could wander into a washroom whistling a little tune and thinking about something else... then we could ambush his ass and dunk him for the swirly he deserves... hey wait a minute he will be at the Railway Club tomorrow... Hmmmm.

I miss those days.

June is bike month don't you know.

Last weeks supper show was phenomenal... Jesse Matheson lit a batch of firecrackers and threw them down Cameron Dilworth's pants while a crack band of experts played "white Rabbit". Apparently it was a prepared gag as Cameron has a nickel plated groin guard pre cooled in liquid nitrogen. Unfortunately the fire trucks were called and pandemonium arose on Dunsmuir street, where veteran journalist Carl Fatman was stunned repeatedly with a Gripstone 4000 TM stun gun. Then Matheson set the bar doing 5 handstand push-ups as a challenge to any other lowly supper show hosts.

Tomorrow night we have the Music of The Doors.

Keeping to the spirit of Bike month there was good representation from the cyclist contingent as i counted 45 bike helmets in the joint.

If i had an iphone i could do this from the beach... technically anyway

God damn the weeks just fly by and the Supper Show continues to gain momentum. Oddly enough a few people came to the supper show and ordered the DeRailer... the burger we went on about last week... or i guess the week before... if i were a businessman i would see an opportunity... I don;t have time for opportunity... now what kind of a fool jackass would spout that kind of nonsense.

My good buddy Shawn Killaly the drummer is leaving to go live in Toronto... which will work out well when i play "Not my Dog" on July 28 and "Tranzac" on August 4th as part of the 21TR Tuesday night Toronto tour... but the Supper show has lost a most excellent drummer and person.

Last week Smash , Simian Special, Shawn and S Robertson put on a pretty fair supper show clinic. It was fun and good and as i am currently going over the video footage i can declare it a success.

For the month of June we have:

June 3- Cameron dillworth and Jesse Matheson
June 10- the music of "the Doors"
June17- the Hey Rock "so long sucker" goodbye party
June 24- The Legion of flying Monkies Horn Orchestra

Super Robertson who may make an appearance from time to time will focus on completing the new album in June.

Another week another review... load up the toboggan and lets go for a ride

Last week my good buddy SMASH put together the SRSS... or at least brought out a few band's worth of fine musicians to jam it out. He even had the opening act (a woman named Sandra Bouza) who was set to come and jam with us afterward... on principle a perfect supper show. The only problem was the loud insane feedback that happened during her set... i think it was due to some soundman the night before who didn't know what he or she was doing and so a bunch of settings were tweaked in the wrong direction. That's just my guess... but in 4 years of the supper show that has never happened before... so i would assume that some band that thinks that they are about to make it big and wants to bring their pot smoking, beer swilling buddy with them as a sound man and he gets in there and starts tweaking knobs with no understanding of the consequence of each little tweak.

Actually come to think about it i do remember hearing that sound a long timer ago at the Purple Onion during a Groovie Gals set... and i remember how that happened.

Band becomes over conscious of their sound... asks freshly baked boyfriend to fix a problem with the bass... he goes over and starts tweaking knobs and then you hear that sound that makes everybody in the room uncomfortable... that guy doesn't touch soundboards anymore.

Where was i... Oh Yea Sandra finished her set and then a dozen or so of us took to the stage... we were going to start with an improvisation but i abandoned that plan as i was feeling a little rattled after the sound disaster... it probably took me back to that moment at the Purple Onion. The point was we needed to come out hard, so we did by pulling Simian Special out of the audience and doing a version of Bent... just sit on a groove and feel good for a while. Sim's inspiring vocals soothed us and then it was good times. We actually only played 3 songs but they became what one might describe as a "DOOM JAM" is that right? i have heard the term before (doom jam)... perhaps a doom jam is more minor and gloomy. Perhaps we should ask our good friend, and author of Difficult Music, Mule Hughes to define DOOM JAM.

I Taped the show but unfortunately i had it set up to film Sandra first and then after the feedback fiasco i never "zoomed out" to catch the full stage and all the players... which would have made for better documentation.

you can see Sandra, SR and Maia... also playing are Vic on congas, Smash on Bass, Jeffery on guitar, Blake on drums and Audrey on vocals... so there wasn't quite a dozen... my first ever blogging half truth.

this part of the jam is where we were promoting the Railway Club Kitchen... for some reason.

Next week we have Shawn Killaly in his farewell tour... did you know he his leaving to go and live in Toronto?
