2nd Anniversary re-cap

Beyond a shadow of a doubt the 3 stars were Willingdon Black, Alvaro Rojas and 2 Sticks Hobbs, everything else was just dressing. Like i mean never mind "Jam band" or "pop group" or any of those fool labels, these guys were sharp, tight and smart pulling out appropriate covers and new grooves in perfect sequence. Considering it was all fly by the seat of your pants much respect must be given. OK.

Super Robertson and Shockk took turns giving out Gold Medals to the worthy. Clearly the highlight was best mustache won by Cory Curtis (who i might add won best beard last year) and his stash named Kevin.

And on the third plane... lets call the band plane 1, Robertson/Shockk plane 2 and then the puppets plane 3. The 2 puppets run by Pockets and Fire-Man added witty dialogue and did some presentations themselves.

All in all it was a fine night... the best yet was what some said, when we get some photographs in we will get them up.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS AND THE SUPER ROBERTSON SUPPER SHOW

It should be noted at this time the Super Robertson Supper Show will run into conflict with the Vancouver Canucks playoff hockey in which event Hockey will take president, as it should.

Therefore if it's Wednesday and there is a Vancouver playoff game that will be happening between the hours of 7:30-8:30pm then the Railway Club will be showing the game on the big screen.

There has been talk of some intermission music but we are not sure of this at this time. It could be possible to make sets and then monitor how the Canucks played in the period after that set to see if those songs provided the proper "Omen factors" in an attempt to build a bulletproof set for game 7... but you know sports fans and their looney ideas.

What is a blog? March 28 2007

Ruth Minnikin and Reels came to play the Supper Show on Wednesday March 28th. Only Robertson and Fire-Man were representing from the usual crew... the show was packed and everybody went home a winner... what follows is some jibberish written by Robertson after he got home

I guess the reality is that on the way home i remembered how a certain individual, we shall call "FMan", helped put the drum kit away and in doing so knocked the "deodorizer" off the wall smashing fluid over everything. i have yet to recover from that event. It's always hard to hold down a conversation when you smell like a quebec hospital after a "super-bug" scare!

Then there was the usual post show dismantling

"Robertson Failed aggressively as a host somehow getting everybody on stage for the intro and then going into one of the one of the more difficult songs known. This is a fool's error that won't be forgotten. You see i had it in my head that i was going to play 2-3 songs and they were going to be set numbers, thus closing my mind to the grand possibility of what could be possible, which of course was the nature of the show... But after that unfortunate incident with that band "Dog foothill" i was leaning on not being involved. could have just played "Sun rises" or "on frozen pond" as we had a woman with a golden voice and some great players... but no i had to have my head up my ass.

I did help on one song and i took care of a drunk who wanted to play one song on our guests guitar. An interesting conversation.... he was sarcastically asking me that if i thought he missed the "Market trends", to which i told him that it wasn't about that, he insisted, i refuted, he insisted, i refuted... i told him it was about me telling them they could play and letting them play. I should have given him a fine chokingl

and then..

What about the part where i biked back to the club to clean up the fluid after i got home... this is the kind of sanity I'm running on!

The bast entertainment that S Robertson provided was to Ed, andrew, francis and friend outside the club explaining the walk home and the ride back dealing with thurst issues... perhaps another blogaroo sometine

Feb 28 rehash

A good version of "Blue skies" was preformed sung by Deborah of the land of deborah, sim special showed and we did a few numbers including the Roadbed classid "Bent". Great crowd, good show, people danced and then some jackass tried to get on the mic and wouldn't give up... He was on Fire-Man's mic making loud annoying sounds, can you believe that shit? As for tension, it was all there. 21 Tandem Repeats when into a fine groove and Robertson literally stood on his head... that jam got honked out.

A few new songs and a few classics. Super Steve was upset Willingdon Black slipped off after the show as he seemed to have a mind to talk hockey.

Feb. 21/06 Recap

Those who have followed British politics over the past few years will be familiar with the term 'Scottish Raj,' which refers to the fact that many leading politicians and public figures in the U.K. these days are from Scotland. I think there may also be something like a 'Burnaby Raj' in the local music scene, or at least in my little circle of it.

The Supper Show's guest last this week was Kirsten Bole, who apparently lives in Burnaby. I've noticed that Supper Show guests are often of the accoustic balladeer variety, which is great…there've been some superb performers. Having said that, my own preferences are generally more electric and rock, so I thought her stuff was a nice shift of gears. A four-song set of genuinely cool songs, played with instrumental panache on bass (no accompaniment, except a rhythm sample on one), and adorned with some very good singing. The songs were atmospheric, even a bit exotic, but still substantial and well-constructed.

What else happened? Sim has returned to the Supper Show lineup over the past few weeks. Perhaps he got wind of the fact that we had been giving a few Supersimian songs a bit of a workout in his absence. Anyway, he was his usual engaging, well-voiced self. His presence tends to push things in a certain direction song-choice wise, and I was happy to head in that direction myself.

21TR started with some spartan groove/Mr. Greenie variation, and I think the only other thing we did, aside from the 45-minute opening/closing theme, was an ill-advised makeshift number about bears delivered over a Motown riff. Oh yeah, there was also 'Wastelands.' Maybe not one of the better versions.

As the ever changing world and supper show evolves here is the new rule. If you want to play the supper show as a guest you must cover the experience for this blog.

Yes i realize this is insanity, but insanity is the new reality ain't it.

Valentine's Day 2007

A new journalist has emerged... crows to burnaby, which saves us the trouble of trying to hash together something that sounded interesting. Moreover it looks like we have a guest for next weeks show.

After the show many people mentioned that you couldn't see the chocolate come flying off the stage... The idea that it was dangerous, and then I remembered how Mule Hughes moved seats after being struck with a "9th inning world series 3-2 pitch fastball truffle".

Geez I wish I could go to a free show early enough for me to get a nights sleep and see a great insane maniac drummer hijack a show and then be attacked with fine sweets.

February 7 Re-cap

To recapitulate, Super Robertson wore a purple velour evening gown, and made up words to "Pretty Woman" as the band played said song behind him. I tried not to choke on my Boxcar Burger, caught in the act of trying to eat and laugh at the same time. "Is this how I want to go?" I asked myself. "With gunk lodged in my windpipe at the Super Robertson Supper Show?" No—I put the burger down and chose life.

Behind closed curtains, Super changed into garb more suited to the frontman of 21 Tandem Repeats. The curtains opened again, and the Supper Show carried on with a full hour of 21 TR. King Dinosaur brought a hula hoop for everyone to try. All those middle-aged hips could not make the thing go for long. Fireman told a story about a clash of artistic sensibilities and Robertson spoke about his attempts to contact the Canada Post, um, "employee resources" line. [Never blog about work, especially not someone else's work.] Sim Special came up to sing "Bill Von Bacon Tell" and a wee bit on "Failure." "Bengal Tiger" was threatened, but not played, and "Enter Sandman" was touched upon. The Supper Show has stumbled upon the perfect combination of improv comedy and musical showmanship, and it seems like whatever random night I decide to check it out there's damn fine entertainment to be had.

It was all good times, the band 21 Tandem Repeats just keeps getting better and better, it's really amazing how they have grown even more comfortable on that stage. The shows for the most part were go up and play the music kind of shows... Perhaps the calm before the storm. I hear the band was going over a "drunk" version of "The Sun Rises" the other night.

I would suggest a puppet show to come soon as the push up/sit up thing is getting stale.

I guess the shows have been great... People have been coming the food has been good, and the shows have been musical and entertaining... It's just this nuisance of a blog that is gumming up the works.

That post that was here before that made reference to an Elephant's body part was a joke.

Mid November-Mid December Re-cap

There was a fine post that appeared here for a day but the author fell prey to self censorship lost his mind and deleted it... in the post a Man was driving a country road with a coffee listening to some great music feeling on top of the world and then later he was inching into Vancouver through a Snowstorm cursing his existence... all that was brought around to the relevance of the Supper Show.

Last night a magician went table to table doing tricks as 21 tandem repeats with drummer Sam Cartwright stomped a fine clinic. A beautiful young girl was going to play but she never showed.... and the best comment overheard was "It's all part of becoming an adult... getting your own drug dealer"

The week before the lovely Land Of Deborah sang Blue Skies and played a few of her original tunes, a fine treat indeed. the best overheard comment was from the ever quotable King Dinosaur "Yea the best thing that ever happened at Madison Square Gardens was when the 1st one burnt down".

The week before it was the night of Fire-Man, who's Super robertson Supper Show theme song finally came together with authority... i think there was beer aerobics and the best overheard comment was a man talking to Fire-Man " yea i know when i was younger and doing that sort of thing i always aspired to being an anomaly so keep up the good work"

On Saturday December 16 2006 Canada Lynx Records is celebrating the Release of 21 Tandem Repeats CD "Never Wanted to be Anyone" at the Western Front @ 303 east 8th avenue Vancouver B.C. The show starts @ 8PM and is all ages. Also playing is Interior Design and Dyad.

November 15 re-cap

Well.. Not quite sure who reads this blog, but, if anybody does I'm sure our crew of writers are not to be accused of what WB once termed "smiley -faced PR". That said I would say that Fox Northman who opened the show was one of the best singer songwriter's that I have ever seen... It was a watch in awe moment.

Fox Northman is from a place called... Is it Hay town?... North of Calgary... And he came to Vancouver to get away from distractions and write. A Beardman who has been at the supper show for the past few months sitting quietly at the back. Being a beardman and a supper show regular he almost got called for bass duty one night and then a few weeks ago got assigned to do a set. He delivered. If you missed it then give yourself a punch in the nose now.

Ace bass player Alvaro Rojas was to miss the show because he was set to record with Microscopic... But fate had other ideas. A Storm blew in and power was knocked out so he came. So it was Shockk on drums with the regular 21TR lineup. The crew played a pretty good set although Robertson was a bit distracted by the 2 girls that decided to go top-less. Then there was the version of Hey Rocks's livingroom that had 2 bass solos and I drum solo.. The crowd was overjoyed.

After the show ace guitarist Willingdon Black began a mental chess game with S. Robertson over the upcoming 21 tandem repeats studio session mentioning that certain songs may need more thorough discussion before recording. Robertson recalled a scene from the end of Julius Ceasar's life where he played Brutus... But that's irrelevant ain't it.

November 8 re-cap

It was a strange day... S Robertson was running late and there was no parking and there was a rush set-up and the band was having trouble ordering pitchers of beer (good crowd).

21 tandem repeats, had a good night... everybody made the point of saying it was one of the best shows after the show, and since that doesn't happen every week, i'll believe it. A. Parker even noted that when its' just the regulars up there 21TR just plays the songs but when there is a table of young attractive girls at the front S. Robertson does handstands on the dance floor. He must have been referring to the cobra vs mongoose fight that Robertson (playing the mongoose and the cobra) reenacted during "Poem moment".

My favorite part was the version of On Frozen Pond where the audience did an 8 bar hand clapping solo. Yep that was it... sorry to suzan who got hit with S. Robertson's shoe when it flew off his foot when the mongoose dodged a strike from the cobra.

You should see him imitate a cat playing with a ball of yarn

November 1 Recap

The Sugar Bush launch party was a great success, with a healthy crowd of (mostly) Supper Show newbies witnessing 21 TR at full pelt for half an hour, followed by Jenn Farrell's reading of two selections from The Book. Thanks to Super, WB, Shockk & Alvaro, the Railway, and everyone who came out.

October 18 Recap

This particular Supper Show featured a solid set from 21 TR, with Shockk on drums. S Bloggerson was in fine form, telling stories of his childhood as a street hockey-playin' Leafs fan, firing shots on net hoping that five in a row in the top corner would be the charm to enable his team to reign victorious that night. The band played "On Frozen Pond" and other hit songs.

Coming to the SR Supper Show November 1

The official launch party for Sugar Bush and Other Stories, the debut collection of short stories by Vancouver writer Jenn Farrell (aka fancylady aka Ms. Mule).

October 4th re-cap

Sound-man was late, drummer had headache, Robertson was lackluster but D Trevlon saved the day.

D Trevlon, a sound-man and fine performer got things set up... Robertson ended up on a guitar and doing a version of "What's in the bag?" an old Knockin' Dog number... next thing you know we have no band as a result of the fact that we were going to play SUPERSIMIAN, and we had the weird start... Robertson and Rojas on guitar and drums respectively dogged another tune and then D Trevlon saved the night... at least somebody came to play... (it was a bizarre night with 21 tandem repeats playing the next night, so we altered our course).

So D Trevlon plays a mean guitar and his voice can really fill a room... not bad on the whistling either. he played a set and was encourage to play some more, great stuff.

Then SUPERSIMIAN took the stage and hammered their songs home, by then we were all warmed up and it was time to end the show, but this time we did the intro song at the end and it worked fine.

Remember no supper show on Wednesday October 11... we are good for the rest of the year after that.
