May 13th 2009 re-cap

it's funny, here i am trying to think of what happened last week but all i feel is blogophobia... there were some interesting conversations last week after the SR Supper Show, and some of them ended with the idea that what gets written in a blog can affect the overall fundamental belief in the supper show among certain members of the team... or so the theory goes... which is all pure rubbish of course but alas i digress... i always try to get an "alas i regress" into the odd blogaroo, it's a good way to forget that kind of fool gibberish.

We had another full band scenario with King Karl on the skins, Smash Bass on the bass, Mean Maia on the keys and Syllable Sim on vocals. Then Gentle Genny Trigo came up to try to belt out a few numbers over some spanking drums and acoustic guitar while Jumpin' JLS worked the sound board.

Last week

Jesse Matheson held the fort last week at the Supper Show... the band Vale was there to play a few numbers and another man and woman team who had superior harmonies. i sat with Nick and Deb and saluted Super Steve at the high point of the night.

Jesse did a great job involving folks and it was a fine show indeed... there was one moment where i was looking up thinking "look at Jesse there trying to keep the show going"... i think he was interviewing somebody after their set live in front of the audience. I knew what he was going through...

Tomorrow we have Genny Trigo and Super Robertson, with an outside chance that Julio Cerama (who delivered a package to me containing a "Crooner's resume") might come down to play some proper conga's. i guess we will see.

Monster Jam

It was Mule Hughes that called it after last weeks show... My work with fate, omens and good sense paid off in spades. I doubt many understand that last statement but it is all true... Not that you can go wrong with the people who came to play... but if i was aware that they would all bet there i perhaps would have lost my mind and tried to do something Grand, and hence foiled what did become grand.

Ok so i go to see ZOE Trio play at the Libra room on friday night, only they are not playing, but some blues band is playing so i head down to the Railway to catch some music and it turns out "the deep dark Woods" are playing, who are quite the band... and i run into a few people one of them being Ken Killbeat who introduces me to a CBC producer who just happened to be talking about the Super Robertson Supper Show on account that she took a phone call from somebody who saw the Radio Play last week and was raving about how good this new "Diner Theater" was... Now i agree completely and then start to panic about the next Super Robertson Supper Show... it HAS to be good... not just because somebody might come to check it out, but more for me... I have to answer the bell.

So i'm taking in the music and i happen to meet this guy Karl Jonasson who just moved from Saskatchewan like 4 days ago and he is a drummer... then the old Super Robertson Supper Show long ball scenario starts spinning in the brain. I say, i guess i should get a bass player... he said "yea you should"... so i found a bass player that came with a keyboard player (Smash and Maia) and emails started to happen... and then on Monday Shawn Killaly made contact saying he was ready to rock... and Shawn being a King Hell drummer really got things going. i couldn't possibly not have Shawn come because i met a guy in a bar who said he was going to come and play and had yet to contact me... even though i was sure he could play and was coming.

We decided on a few numbers and were going to do some improv, so come Wednesday we had 2 drummers, 2 bass players, 1 keyboard player, 3 singers and a guitar player. the only problem was that the snare and tom were not in the kick drum where i last left them but rather locked in a small room at the back of the bar... that put me in a bit of a bad mood... there was a brief moment of hope that i might find my stool and my stick bag but that didn't happen.

it looked like we weren't going to find the snare and tom but yet people were going to make it work... for a minute we had 2 drummers playing half a kit... that the kind of spirit we had going on. i didn't tape the show because, as i said before i needed it to be a good show... that's the pro OMEN reading i was talking about before... luckily Smash taped it... i thought he might but i didn't mention it as that would have cursed the event.

Smash brought a stand up bass and an electric bass and Alvaro Rojas showed up so we had pro double bass. And then of course Simian Special was there to sing.

Next week we have Jesse Matheson and Cameron Dilworth... in what they call a diner show.

The stage was set like that for the Radio Play called The Thirsty Detectives in 5¢ a Dance... I was Joined by a lovely Cellist named Christina Rzepa, we did a few numbers and then the radio play happened... and then we played "Sun Rises" with a guy named Arie on keyboards.

The Radio Play was excellent... i recorded it but there was talk of © among the crew as they collected the scripts... so i would keep an ear to the ground for The Thirsty Detectives and don't miss the next one.

For the next Supper Show which would be Wednesday April 29 it looks like we have drums, bass, keyboards, a few songs, a puppet show and a lecture on "success by simplification".

And then there are all of those other nasty blogs out there that look like the front yard of an abandon house... but this here blog has a supper show that it must answer to.

Ok what is the routine... review last weeks show and promote that show that is now like 22 hours away.

Longtime bredrin of the Canada Lynx camp King Dinosaur came to play a show to commemorate the release of his latest CD "King of the Kootenay". He brought 11 and some folk went home empty handed. Myself i had received a copy of King Dinosaur "Kings Classic", which happens to be a one off with original hand drawn art that contains the first half of both King Dinosaur's CD's.

King Dinosaur doesn't trouble with originals and is more of a translator of classic music... stuff like Casey Jones, Ramble on Rose, The night they drove old Dixie down, Wisky in the jar... I recall one bystander at a King Dinosaur show, i think it was Vancouver, Plaza of Nations 96' declared it an old school open handed five finger musical spanking... I think it was 96'... yea... he might have played Nelson in 98' and i think he was in Mission in 99', but i know i wasn't.

King Dino had a small technical difficulty during his version of "Hurricane" (Bob Dylan version of course) but it didn't slow the thunder and it was fixed by the time the cops went up to the hospital room to talk to the man through his one dying eye.

It's always a treat when King Dinosaur comes to play. My kids turned on the video camera and ran the battery out right before the show but the papparatzi was definately in the house so it shouldn't be too long before the world is abuzz in twits and tweets.

Simian Special happened to be there so he and i did our best completely unrehearsed immitation of Simon and Garfunkle playing SUPERSIMIAN, Roadbed and 21 tandem Repeats numbers.

But get this... On April 22 2009 we have a Radio Play production called "The Thirsty Detectives" in 5¢ a Dance. My man Craig Bougie sent me a 17 page script and it's pretty funny and good and there is a cellist and a violin player ready to add the suspense music. i declare you might be a fool to miss this... OK i said it

April the 15th

On April the 15th we have the pleasure to bring you the King Dinosaur CD Release show... word has it that he will be giving away CD's to those who can answer correctly the Kootenay trivia part of the evening.

Other than that, our favourite puppet Uncle Stan may drop in for a visit, and Super Robertson will have to bring to the table some form of entertainment.

Last week Emily Milliken and Super Robertson manned the SRSS and things went very well... next week we have some folks who proposed to me to do a Radio Drama live... bring it on...

And the SR Easter Show went very well, and i didn't even take a bath on the deal... amazing sets by Emily Milliken, Cameron Dilworth, Caleb Stull, Jesse Matheson, Ruth Minnikin and Genny Trigo. Big thanks to Turbo, Michelle and Mule Hughes as well for their fine contributions that made the night work.

OK here we go again... Simple old Supper Show tomorrow.

My Grandfather, Watson Allen Robertson, had 2 other sayings for these occasions... One of them was "holey kitty" and the other was "Christmas Cake"... i have my own that my five year old daughter reminds me not to use...

what is the occasion? it is quarter to 11 on a Tuesday night and the supper show blog is a week stale... and then there is that other thing... that concert i am putting on on Thursday night at La Casa Del Artista (150 east 3rd ave Vancouver B.C.). All of the sudden the supper show becomes irrelevant.... "all of the sudden" who writes my stuff... as Flinstone would say "that's a hot one Barney". Speaking of the Flinstones i watched the first ever episode on the internet the other day "the Flinstone flyer" and the opening theme was a different one.

What happened last week at the supper show i know you are all dying to know... i think i got like 60 emails today inquiring. It weas the Cameron Dilworth and Jesse Matheson supper show and it was April fools day so Jesse put fake vomit on Cam's guitar and Shawn who was playing drums was nailing a whoopie cushion into a drum mike causing the soundman and guitar player to search in vain for a bad cable... Gut buster.

Caleb Stull played, Land of Deborah Played and there were 2 other guests who i am afraid to name for fear of getting names wrong... i was busy busting the balls of the Railway staff over a poster for a show at the Railway called "the spirit of the Railway Club" that has everybody and his brother on the bill except one person.. some jackass who has been putting on a free show there for the past 4 years every week... oh well you know how it goes...

Of course there is a supper show tomorrow, but i would rather you come out to The Super Robertson Easter Show to help minimize my financial loss in trying to put on a show... At least i get to use the Krusty the Clown line "whoooo boy i really took a bath on that one". Have no fear i'm laughing, but i might point out that it is your only chance to catch a jewel of a songwriter and singer, Ruth Minnikin who is touring the country having just released "depend on this"... she is from Halifax.

happy Easter... it is now Garden planting season, do yourself a favour and pant some carrots.

March 25th re-Cap

I was asked to add some percussion for one of Genny's songs so before the show i went into SR's private percussion stash and noticed the my stick bag was now gone... holy shit i was even in a good mood for a moment. perhaps some bastard needed some sticks to go with his stool.... luckily for all involved Jeff Hawker posted a blog on his take of the supper show so we will be spared any more of my negative gibberish at this time.

The Blog it titled "Free beer and stolen wood"... he had a conversation with our man Fire-Man Jeff Hawker's supper show blog... I was going to just copy and paste the bastard here but i know that Mr. fucking blog edict himself "Mule Hughes" will read this blog and I'm trying to stay out of the doghouse with regard to proper blog form.







Next week is April Fools Day so i expect an number of good pranks from our friends Jesse and Cam tomorrow. I guess the Super Robertson Supper Show is now 4 years old I'll give out some trophies at the Super Robertson Easter show which happens on Thursday April 9 at La Casa Del Artista located at 150 east 3rd avenue.

Emily Milliken and Super Robertson manned the Supper show last week an played some music to a boisterous crowd. We played a few songs we wrote together this year and a few that we know otherwise.






Jeff Hawker will join Genny trigo and Super Robertson for the supper show on March 25... which is coming up in a few hours.

Girlfriends and Boyfriends played the Super Robertson Supper Show last week and brought half of Vancouver with them... it was more of a show for them than a supper show but everybody was having a good time so i laid low and listened to a fine set of indie tunes. Did i mention they did Joy Division's Shadowplay? Any band doing Joy Division can play with me any day. The band seemed confused over the format which is odd because a few of the members have actually played the supper show before, but then i guess that if you read the SRSS blog then you might think SR has his head up his ass anyhoo... and what is a good band without a few patented mix ups

To close the night was a project presented as "Smashing SR" that SmassBass caught with a digital recording device.



The next show which would be tomorrow will have the lovely and talented Emily Milliken and perhaps some other surprises.

the good news is that i taped the show last week and i have the video up already, so if you are a Bloggerson, as am I, then you are in good shape for a monday night. Oddly enough i was just tinting my fingers together in celebration of how i could possibly be so on the ball when my wife raced up from bed and reminded me what we forgot to do.

You see tomorrow is my daughters 5th Birthday and her first tooth came out today so we set her up for thee old "tooth ferry deal"... but then mom and dad got into the Ceasers and almost forgot... which would have been a bad start for a little girl who is aware, nervous and excited about her big day tomorrow. It's OK dear, the tooth ferry probably had some important things to do on the internet... maybe tomorrow? No worries it's all sorted now and i can go back to my fuzzy little bubble.

Last week was a pure clinic at the Supper Show Cam and Jesse had their natural chemistry:

One of the great things about the supper show is it's ability to evolve and i think a great mutation has happened this year with the introduction of the Dilworth/Matheson and guest routine. They call their guests out of the audience who leap up and quickly play a song... sometimes they question the guest as in the case of Gido:

Another full house at the Supper Show last week (Feb 25 2009), which was good but then a late band , late sound man, Drum stool gone, drummer concerned about the drum kit quality, Fire-Man explaining things too people... so i had to go have a few words with Super Steve... Super Steve, i think, could sense my anxiety over the latest facts my brain was forced to process. The lesson of course is all is well... except of course for the fact that SOME SWINE BASTARD STOLE MY FUCKING DRUM STOOL. it was, i'm sure, one of thee old patented misplacement misunderstanding things where somebody gets an extra drum stool that magically made it out into the club... very annoying indeed.

Anyhoo where was i... well i guess the whole blogaroo is fucked now that i am in the mindset of chewing on the fact that the drum kit has taken a further hit... if you play drums you know that sitting on a chair is officially bullshit.

By the time Andorra played it was so packed i had to move the recording device by the side of the stage. Andorra is a bright new band on the Vancouver scene that mentioned during their set that they are looking for a drummer... i think Adam said "if you play drums and you like whats going on come and talk to us"

I have a damaged hand and a lot of things to do this week... so let's get through this dog.

Last week (February 18) there were 3 performers... first off was a man named Adam from the Bob Dylan Society... Super Steve thought it was great and King Dinosaur noted that it was early Bob Dylan. You can never really go wrong with a Bob Dylan song and Adam did the songs justice... Then up came Robert Thomas Murphy and Adam moved to a supporting role with an electric guitar. Robert Thomas Murphy played some original songs that used Dylan'esque chord patterns with more modern rock vocals... it was all good. Last up was our hero S Robertson who once again was treated to a surprisingly attentive audience. The plan was to play with passion... whatever the hell that means... i guess what i found out that it means that a lot of people read the SRSS blog, as people kept referring to the words they read in the blog. How did old SR do? that's a good question and since i opted not to tape the show we will never truly know, which i wished after wards that i did tape the show, but if i had a recorder going... it would it have changed the balance of the universe enough. I remember being a kid playing hockey by myself in the driveway before a Toronto Maple Leaf playoff game... i would make up these scenarios whereby if i could perform a task at a certain lever for a prolonged period of time then the Leafs would win the game... one of those superstitious things... another example would be a few years ago when the Canucks were in the playoffs and i was doing my mail route and i came across a group of native people having a celebration under a giant tree and as i walked by we smiled at each other and they asked me if i wanted to hug the tree... SR's is always game for a little tree hugging so i gave the tree a hug... and the Canucks won that key game. now what do you think i did on the next game day... of course i had to hug the tree.

I don't think we will ever know how old SR did as he was among a room full of friends, and they always say nice things. There were a few folks rooting for a return of 21 tandem repeats... i guess it's good to be missed.

Hi Ho to all of those out there in Blogland... may i suggest you now do something productive like go for a walk. I am home alone with the kids and i have watched all of the hockey highlites (only 2 games today). Where was i?

Did i mention that the class "A" Hammerhead Cam Dilworth kept referring to the show and myself as "Robinson" and not "Robertson" for like the 18th million time... you would think that all of the posters on the club wall that announce "The Super Robertson Supper Show" might help, but it's probably like that gig we did in Nanaimo back in November and we had that huge Banner behind us that said "21 Tandem Repeats" and of course some dude comes up after the show to tell us we were really good and "What was the name of our band" and so WB tells him "21 Tandem Repeats" and he says "OH like the Banner that was behind you when you were playing"... "Yea like that". Kind of funny when ever i write his name in the blog i become paranoid.. "are there 2 l's or just one" and i look it up. But then again one of the members of the Super Robertson Supper show Facebook group came to the show and his last name is Mallin and i came up to him and barked "Malkin what's going on!"... i corrected myself looked up on stage and was called "Robinson" again.

It was of course the 2nd episode of the Cameron Dilworth and Jesse Matheson Supper show... 2 great guys with excellent talent who are learning the supper show ropes doing one show per month. They brought out C.S. Rippin, Jeremy Todd, Super robinson... i mean Robertson and Caleb Stull to play some songs and they had a neat twist on the guest vibe. They just stayed up on stage drinking while the guest played a song... Cam just took off his guitar and passed it to the guest. This can actually be better than trying to orchestrate a massive curtain pull and lineup change that the supper show has seen in the past. It created a nice open feeling of people sharing songs. After the show the leaders were suffering from post Supper show Stress disorder where they thought that the failed to put on a good show. For the record it was a fine show totally worth the price of admission. I just know the feeling.

Next week on February 11 we have Simian Special and Jacqui Brown.

Dustun Rilcof, Ben Mahony and S Robertson

On this night a lot of the "regulars" who frequent the Supper Show were absent, but two large conglomerants of forein exchange students completed january for a string of "sold out" shows.

First up Dustin Rilcof showed his sensitive side, and played some songs that bordered on... love songs. the Canucks were up 2-1 at this time. Rilcof's set demonstraited some excelent finger picking and some fine melodies... but like the exchange students i missed a lot of the words. It was a great set and i'll give him 4 stars.

Next up was Ben Mahony, a man who has lived all over this fine Country and played a geographical set with songs written in all different provinces at various times in his life. He seemed like a king hell fellow and he brought some guy he met at an open stage in Toronto a month back. His songs had good energy and drove like an old school Buick down a mountain road... which reminded me about this time i hitchhiked back from 100 mile house.

Last up with the rapid turnover was our hero, the Kingpin of the Supper Show... Super Robertson. The crowd was incredibly good to him... people listened to the songs applauded and then sat in silence for the next song... this definatly caught SR off guard but like a veteran soilder he adapded. He played a fine version of the littles which earned him a few CD sales. Go tiger go!

After the show we got to catch the patented Vancouver Canuck collapse as they turned a 3-1 lead into a 5-3 loss. You could tell that Super Steve had seen this type of thing happen before and smartly made a quick exit after the 2nd period.

On Wednesday February 4 2009 we have the 2nd edition of the Jesse Matheson and Cameron Dilworth Supper Show... and they have invited S Robertson, CS Rippin, and a few others to come and play a song. Lets fire it up boys.

Sleuth reporter Olak Reece reports on the Jan 21 supper show

Once again a full house came out to celebrate Vancouver's only weekly free show from 7:30-8:30 on Wednesdays... couldn't find any others.

Opening up the show was Chris Kelly kingpin of the band Pender, that was formerly known as That Kelly Boy, and may again take that name. Chris has a nice rich voice and can sure write a mean song and was sounding just fine playing 5 numbers.

Next up was the wonderful Land of Deborah who played some original tunes and a Poison cover. Soundman JLS was working the board as boss Nick... and husband of LOD looked on.

To finish up the night the supper show's hero Super Robertson kicked into a few tunes explaining that they were mostly about himself except one that was about his father's long lost bee hive and then it was the tune "Fuse lit bombs" to end the night... a hit from 21 Tandem Repeats Never Wanted to be Anyone.

Next week January 28 we have Ben Mahony from the Yukon and a few regulars from the V5T postal code Dustin Rilcof, and Super R.

January 14: Sim Special Supper Show

Cub reporter Mule Hughes forgot his camera but weighs in nevertheless:
With an ailing Super Robertson tending to his ailing family this week, it was left to Max "Sim Special" Arnason to run the Supper Show. And the thing ran like a top, with a healthy crowd of attentive punters, drinks in hand, bums in seats, filling the half of the Railway Club that matters.

Bryce Drohan was up first, singing a set of serious songs in a big Cornell/Vedder/Lanegan-calibre voice. I gathered that these were acoustic arrangements of songs usually performed by his band—no matter, they sounded pretty full-on to me.

Then it was time to put on your black leather for the power-goth big-beat stylings of Simian Special. This set marked the debut of new guitarist Yakir Biton, who's definitely a keeper. He had a really good sense of when and what to play. The hits, they were plentiful: "Freaky Release," "Solid Hole" (raging!), a U2 or maybe a Coldplay cover (I don't know from popular music anymore), and a concluding dip into the communal song well for "Hey Rock Took the Bait." Despite being justifiably cautious about their volume ('tis bad form to rock too loudly at the Supper Show), they played a belting set, with Sim wailing away like Ian Gillan at times. If that sorta thing doesn't pull your pork, then you are dead to me.

January 7th re-cap

Cameron Dilworth and Jesse Matheson put on a major clinic last week. Standing up on stage together armed with guitars they played songs and sung together. They were funny, smart and quick and they are both excellent singers... perhaps they had a few to many songs about "Super Robertson", but i can let that slide. I was wishing i filmed the show but i just don't have time to deal with that right now.

It was a good time... we made Mule a cake and we ate it all... but then the Canucks lost, and i had to watch it by myself as Super Steve was absent.

Next week (January 14) we will have Simian Special.

2009

OK,

Clearly there is some confusion about the state of the Super Robertson Supper Show... most likely due to our Hero's poor communication skills and general bad attitude. Well I'm kind of in a good mood now, how could you not be after the Canadian Junior team stomped the balls of the Swedish national Junior hockey team.

The supper show goes on and starting this week (Wednesday January 7) we have the team of Cameron Dilworth and Jese Matheson as the bill. As it sits now these guys will play one supper show per month... perhaps the first one (wednesday in the month). This will give the audience more variety and will set a challenge to S. Robertson to Be BETTER!

Beyond that it is also unlikely that 21 tandem Repeats, as the core 3 guys and a rotating drummer, will remain as a constant in the show. Now there is no ill will here or anything like that, rather an opportunity for us to take a breath, refocus and come back with a new set list and energy... It is quite possible that 21TR may have some new singers when the new program is launched.

Now i would expect that the "new 21TR" songs will be worked into many upcoming super robertson supper shows... actually i will demand that from myself.

so we are going to open up the supper show and get some other fine talented folks out there on Vancouver's premier small venue stage... on wednesday January 28 we have a fine man named Ben Mahony from the Yukon coming down to play.

We even started a facebook page for the supper show to go with the myspace super robertson supper show page, and then there is this damn blog... and i am essentially a computer incompetent.


Which reminds me... i learned about Flash memory lately and apparently you can get a video camera with Flash memory that will save hours of time... because with tape you have to load it into the computer in real time. i can no longer possibly film the show and upload it during the week as i run a household taking care of 3 kids while trying to manage a "web presence", a band that for some reason can't seem to get gigs... which kind of raises another question... why are we never... never mind.

Anyhoo, happy new Year to all and i have many other ideas to keep the Super Robertson Supper Show fresh, but hey right now they are just ideas and anybody can have those... the time is now for action.

it's our man Dave Hind with one of his percussive contraptions.

I remember the old days when i started playing music... Dave had a studio outside of london, i think it was an old gas station and we would go out there for Jams... It was usually cold as hell but there was a heater and lots of things to make rhythm on. And there would always be a very long version of the song "Wicked Style". A song where the pocket has been lost it was this hypnotic rhythm on a finger hammering d chord except the d was played 1 fret up... and then it resolved to an e major. I have the feeling it might have been one of those ideas that was never really that good in the first place... great for rhythm grooves and easy to solo over. It was one we always hit at those jams... i remember one time there was this weird bearded guy who was always on acid and we hit that song and he was dancing away in a trance and when it was over he said "that was wicked man, you guys should be playing the Embassy"... the Embassy of course was the shithole dive bar/ hotel/ music venue at the time. Now that i think about it i don't think it was the embassy... it's hard to remember anything anymore... I think the embassy is the actual good venue...

The place the bearded guy on acid said we should have been playing would have been about the same as where we were playing except we wouldn't be able to drink our own spirits rather pay for them at a bar... there of course would have been other side affects as well... = more acid eating beard men.

December 10 re-cap

well i didn't film the show and that made for a better week... Step one in making the supper show more manageable. I am a good employee... i stay on task, for good or ill.

So i guess i can now write anything, no longer bound by the truth... a first for me as a blogger. somebody is shaking their head out there... i can feel it.

It was a good show, there were no drums until i pulled Mule Hughes out of the crowd to play on the last 2 songs. It gave him a good chance to scope out our backs so he could find out where to put the knife... (small inside joke).

The supper show works well with a more toned down (not full band) feel. it gives people the opportunity to talk over the music rather than having to shout over it.

Next week (December 17) is the last supper show of the year, and on January 7 2009 i have managed to talk Cameron Dilworth and Jesse Matheson into doing the supper show... so you could say that the supper show just got stronger... they are going to do 1 Wednesday per month.

The plot thickens and the days go on, and The Super Robertson Supper Show will re-invent itself again.

The supper show

Last week was fun... we broke it up a bit... you see ace guitarist Willingdon Black was out of town so ace guitarist Snow Leopard brought down a guitar and Stupid Robertson went to Bass. It was fun, did i mention that the ever amusing and stellarly skilled Shawn Killaly was on the drums.

It got me thinking about our little tour a few weeks back, and more precisely the makeup of the band for the tour. It was essentially SR and 3 excellent guitar players with one of the excellent guitar players playing excellent drums (Shockk), and Alvaro (Snow Leopard) on bass (as per usual in 21TR) and WB on guitar.

So the supper show is closing out this year and is almost 4 years old now... anybody want to take the reins? i think i am kind of burning out on the old super show...

Just thinking... is the super robertson supper show worth anything to anybody? I say that in a very real way and i say it to a person like myself who does see a value in having a house gig in a good house with good sound and a good location with good food and all... are you somebody or do you know somebody who would like this opportunity, see it as an opportunity and treat it with professionalism and respect to the sound equipment. Perhaps we could go rotating weeks which would cut the load in half and bring greater variety to the show.

I'll keep doing it for now but you know, we will see.

Well 21 tandem repeats are back from their coastal tour minus guitar player Willingdon Black who is in Hawaii looking into a hotel gig for the band.

Brock Pytel came back to the supper show after a long absence... he played some tunes to an very chatty crowd



Brock then moved onto the drums and we were joined by our good friend Simian Special



Finding our groove we hit an old Knockin' dog number called The Drumheller Boogie where Willingdon Black's presence was felt when Alvaro played a variation of his "dish pig" riff

I watched the tape... and made it into mini song movies.

it was in fact the rhythm section that put on the clinic last week after all. it left me wondering about the idea of just replacing SR with a goat, a bucket of oats and a tarp (for the goat shit). Just let the goat eat the oats and call it a show.

Of course I'm joking... the SPCA would be all over that with some animal cruelty bit. if i were a goat, and i am from time to time, i would prefer a bar and a bucket of oats to a cold wet barn. How could i truly know what it is like to be a goat... as in the hoofed ungulate.

where was i... Oh yea the rhythm section stomped some balls.

I wonder how we did last week.

I haven't look at the footage yet which is an odd perspective in writing a little blogaroo, which of course is why it is an approach worth taking.... For the science of it all. Did you see this science experiment, these things are important for the grand "lessons"... which i had just typed "lesions". Almost another freebee there Mule, who for that matter was at the show eating a nice supper and thinking all of those Mule thoughts during the show.

It was a good night to pull drum duty as there was a fine kit on the stage for us to use and perhaps that contributed TO THE FUCKING RHYTHM SECTION MUTINY that occurred on the stage that night. Luckily the super robertson supper show is a place where one can get away with a rhythm section mutiny... from time to time.
where was i, the sound was good.. there was a SKA version of Bengal Tiger that i wish i could have back... i think there might be a fade out in the "official" online version.

Missed a chance to do "transmission"... not sure what i even want to do anymore.

Our guest last week was Clare Love, she was great and i made movies of her set and sent them to her. I figure that since she has her own video upload page then i don't have to worry about being responsible for the © issues... of course i always ask for permission. But i do want to do the right thing for everybody... you come and play the supper show you don't get paid in money... you are treated like a human and if you want you get some video of your set... for good or ill. Anyhoo, if she puts it up i'll post the fucker.

we did this... now there is a nice new red curtain @ the Railway club so i started thinking in terms of bright lights. Turn all the lights up i told the sound man at the start of the show, which went over like a lead balloon with the band, so the lights got turned down again.

October 28 re-Cap

We had a camera malfunction and the bulk of the show didn't get taped. This made for a nice easy week and i could focus on important things like American politics. On a night like this wouldn't it be great to hear a post from the late great Hunter S. Thompson? Oh well, at least those corrupt swine took a mean spanking... Ted Stevens and Alaska senator who was just charged with 7 felonies still has a chance to win... WTF?

Anyhoo Emily and I played a song we wrote last week and Shawn Killaly spanked some mean drums that worked out so well that we did a version of Bengal Tiger that was approved by Mr. WB... and Super Steve missed it.

Tomorrow our guest will be Clare Love, who last played the supper show the night the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburg Penguins to win the Stanley Cup.

Our special guest will be the lovely and talented Emily Milliken, who sings and plays the bass ukulele. She came by the house last night and we wrote a song so we will give that a go as well.

Last week our guest was veteran singer Jacqui Brown who is fresh back in town from a stint in L.A. She played some tunes, 21TR played some tunes and then we all got up together and pulled something out of nothing.

October 15 re-cap

Vale, making their second appearance at the supper show put on a fine clinic. This is a band that the supper show people seem to really like... look for some gold medals to come Vale's way next April if you know what i mean... and if you don't (know what i mean) you should really get your head out of your ass.

October 8 re-cap

DCR was in town from Edmonton, but for some reason didn't play. It was OK because Klagg came back from the dead to reminded Vancouver what good songwriting is. It was a great show and a good lesson on the power of those songs. For me "Toyah" and "Skytrain surfin'" have been going through the head all week.

Super Robertson opened the show with a few numbers, and then a Beggars/21 Tandem Repeats hybrid finished the show with versions of "frusterated man", from the Roadbed Represented CD, "Wishing machine" a 21TR classic and a work in progress titled "Nothing was heard".

The best part about last week was that i showed some films... (episodes of the Carl Fatman show) so i didn't film the set which meant that this past week i was spared the inane task of making internet movies of the songs and posting them for viewing for a few dozen people.

Which of course begs the question of WHY do i do it? I should probably let somebody like SMASH answer that question because he is more likely to come up with a righteous uplifting answer that would leave one with an overwhelming sense of patriotism towards one's music scene, perhaps even going so far as to use the phrase "National Treasure" in a summary statement that might make one feel foolish for even asking the question in the first place.

It was a weird night to show movies as a whole floor from a female college residence came to the show to celebrate a birthday party... apparently they had heard a 21 tandem repeats song on the radio and heard about the show so they thought they would come down town early and warm up for the evening... But it was just me in a suit and a projector showing short TV like episodes of a show i made that are full of constant shameless self promotion.

Imagine a pack of young excited music hungry folks confused while Carl Fatman interviews Shockk on the merits of the band ROADBED.

I remember thinking about this post on the weekend shortly after swimming in the frigid ocean on Saturday morning... it was looking to be a dog of a blogaroo with me going on some self pitying tangent about how i felt bad last week. Let's fuck that shit because one of the things i felt bad about was being ill prepared for a wedding on the weekend... but i made up for it by getting totally smashed at the open bar.

1:50 am Sim refuses to let SR buy the Pizza

during the show- i make like Super Steve and hurl insults at the band and at one point (unlike Super steve) play the doctor in a song called "Have you seen my taint".

10:15 Simian Special and SR leave the Railway Club and Hail a cab across town to the Anza Club.

8:31 Pm bass player Alvaro Rojas goes over the state of his musical career noting that he just did a show with a Gay puppet

8:25 PM uncle Stan the puppet, official comes out of the closet and admits that yes he IS a Gay Puppet

8:15 pM The lovely and talented Land Of Deborah comes on stage to sing Blue skies with 21 Tandem Repeats

8:00 pm we do a song called the "Shockey Stan" which is essentially a "doom jam" version of an incompleted song called the shockey shock.


7:50 pm Uncle Stan answers the questions for the song Hey Rock's living room

7:45 pm Nick tries a new DI

7:37 pm we play the song jupiter

7:32 pm we open the show with "Never wanted to be anyone"

7:28 Pm still no Super Steve... the band gets together and decides to carry on none the less (the vote is not unanimous)

OK... just for reference we have the Curtain pull to beat for the gold medal... in the Men's tandem pull 2008

this is a curtain pull that could easily be beat... you can see the pullers getting in frame and there is a slight mix-up on when the curtain pull is to start. this team really made up for it with an excellent "curtain seal" however. Now i don't want to come down too hard on a fine curtain pull but i think when we see the Russian, Chinese and King Dinosaur teams, with their technical perfection we might see the scores up a bit.

No Supper Show Last week

got the family dinner wrapped up and looked at the clock and thought wow... if there was a Supper Show i would have to run out the door now. i then though "How do i do it?"... and then i took the fists to myself for uttering such self pitying drivel. I think i caught myself with a good shot in the bugle and perhaps broke a bone in my nose.. or at least cracked it. The twins saw me hammering myself in the head and joined in with much excitement.

Never take the opportunities you have for granted... sure you are going to blow a few of them but that is life. Chin up old Robertson and no more of this off topic wallowing... next time it will be the groin.

I Fix the back of the Matrix... that is a co-op car signed out by a good friend to ferry myself and a few others to the beach.

The impromptu "legion of flying monkies horn orchestra" rehearsal session comes to an end when a rebellion breaks out among certain individuals.

Fire-Man seizes the jam and begins what appears to be a sudden rehearsal for a show on August 20th to raise money to save hippo's... if you can believe that.

21 Tandem Repeats plays a set without our 2 ace guitar and bass players... Super Robertson and Chris Banting are joined by Daniel Vallee and the three suffer a bunch of bad song calls by the idiot Super Robertson and manage to play a decent set... at one point Fire-Man leads the crowd in a version of Dish Pig... this goes well and Fire-Man begins to leave orbit.

Cameron Dilworth plays a set with SR and Chris Banting joining on a few select songs... S Robertson misses the first song as Kevin Smith explains again why he thought it was a good idea to turn Robertson's back yard into a "biodegradable" sludgy wasteland.

During the set up we notice that somebody has smashed our drum kit.

to commemorate the return of our new CD we performed 21 Random Poems last week at the supper show... it was actually a pretty good show... there were definitely some dogs in the mix and my unfortunate mumbling disorder.. but the band of Rojas, Macaulay and Banting put on a clinic. In fact i talked to a beautiful French woman after the show who loved it even though she missed the words... there could be something there... alas lets go with this poem and you can find the rest if you have a stomach for Jack assed poetry and some time to kill.



Next week look for Genny Trigo and Baboon Torture Division (July 23) and on the 30th of July it will be the King Dinosaur Supper Show. On August 6 look for the return of Super Robertson at the supper show with special guest lined up Cameron Dillworth

On Wednesday July 16 we are going to attempt 21 random poems. Surly it will take 21 disguises and 21 poems and of course 21 musical numbers pulled from the archived minds of the great Willingdon Black, Alvaro Rojas and Chris Banting.

The following week will be July 23 and set to play the Supper Show are Genny Trigo and Baboon Torture Division.

The following week (august30) will hopefully be somebody reading "Songs of the Doomed" by Hunter S Thompson, for an hour... Just have to find the person. Or if somebody wants to do the supper show send me an email

Super Robertson is off for a 2 week stint to play supper shows in the famed cottage country of prosperous Ontario.


Too bad the CD's aren't back from that sloth duplication company who i erroneously gave my business to.

If you want some subtle comedy check out the one titled "the devil"... great song sounds good but watch the bass player (Jack Snape... brother of Gordon) just "shit the bed" on that one. At one point he interrupts the singer who is in mid verse and asks if he is sure he is in the right key... you hear the singer say a firm but polite YES " and then continue to sing the song (quite well i might add). The the bass player moves back to what looks like a music stand and freezes... still unable to jump the train he continues for a while and then after a long time he tries to discretely remove his sunglasses and stare down at the music stand.

.. THE FAMOUS UNCLE STAN...

Trying to remember what happened last week... took a good shot in the head playing hockey tonight... things have gone weird! Oh shit i remember i brought down ice cream cones. DRUMSTICKS! One of the SRSS Gold Medal winners had a birthday, in fact she won the best attendance. Usually i bring cake, but i think July is a good ice cream month.

In fact there are 2 people who frequent the Supper Show who have a birthday this week... perhaps more ice cream. We need a COSTCO run, because that shithole safeway that is on my way to the supper show sucks a large turtle private organ.

OK so it's ice cream... and maybe those fucking CD's will be ready one day. I believe it was June 10 that the latest 21 tandem repeats CD went to press... and we are at July 9, and the company talks about a 15 working day turn around... sounds like a "spin" to me.

June 25 re-cap

Gentle Infidels put on a fine CLINIC last week... and the show started on time, which pleased S Robertson very much so as that scrappy hound jackel was was trying to niggle him over that very point. Word has it that Super Steve won't be at the Supper Show this week as he made a point about saying I'll see you in two weeks.

21 Tandem Repeats saw S Robertson on Bass and the concept worked out rather well and believe it or not they got to work a STOKE and a Snake Island Salvage number into the set.




And at the end of the show after we played the Roadbed classic BENT we started into Mr. Greenie and Shockk jumped up on guitar thinking we were about to play "surrounded by patch cables"... a neat fusion indeed, and always nice to play with Shockk in any capacity.

Tuesday night update (June 24 2008)

Well i just got an email... and it was MINE the one that talked about the show tomorrow... you know the "Entertainment and Supper Option". We are looking to move toward cell phone user group alerts for the hottest new concerts... but that will be next year.

OK, Last week Vale put on a fine clinic... at 7:30 i was ready to start the show... just couldn't find the stage lights... and then the sound man JL Delinquent flew in the door and threw mic's on the lads... good thing i didn't start the show without a vocal mic. The drums and Amp could have worked in the room without mic's, but it was far superior to have them. JLD is a fine sound man with a master ear and a quick paw... a veritable lynx among mortals.

Jake DeNiro and Moustache Man took up the call of the Supper Show and knocked one out of the park last week. In terms of true art and culture, their show captured and presented an element of the Super Robertson Supper Show using a minimalist electronic remix and award winning photography.

It was what I would call KING HELL.

What happened on June 4... besides the Detroit Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup. i missed that as i was watching a lovely an intimate performance of a songbird named Clare Love. She opted out of being filmed so i can say if you weren't there then you missed a fantastic free show.

Hey Rock took the Bait

Well Super Steve was overjoyed to finally meet Hey Rock in person, and hear what a fine singer he is.

Didn't even get to hang with Hey Rock much... didn't even attempt a swirley. A Swirley is when you shove somebodys head in a tiolet and flush. Shockk and i use to play that game with Hey Rock for years. We came pretty close one day... i would say his head was about 2 inches from the water when he summoned a "hail mary" energy surge and broke loose back away from the tiolet and through the shower doors.


Ahh the good old days when boys would be boys and men would be men, and it can get harder to describe when you don't really have it... like another broken soul who never made it to the end of the Road. Bed time in the city of fallen heroes!

So Hey Rock and his band Ross Vegas came out and stomped down a set. He had a Killer guitar player named Alec Macaulay, or something like that i think... The bass was operated by Smash and for a moment it looked like we could be in for a STOKE medley... oddly enough we did touch on an In 3's medley to close the supper show.

Smash and I got to hang out for a bit later on in the night and i almost got the feeling we might have a winner for the "best comment from the supper show 2008-2009" Gold Medal... but there are still a lot of Supper Shows left so let's not get too hasty. I always tend to view life from a different perspective that sees more opportunity after talking to Smash, so cheers to that.
